Emotional Intelligence for computing students: Building Resilience and Workplace Readiness
In today’s digital world, Emotional Intelligence (EI) is a crucial skill for computing professionals, especially those studying and working in online and hybrid environments. This seminar will equip you with the EI tools needed to thrive in virtual collaboration, build meaningful professional relationships, and navigate the challenges of remote work.
Focusing on three core areas:
- fostering social connections in an online environment
- building connectedness, and preparing for an increasingly hybrid workplace
- this interactive session will provide practical strategies to enhance communication, teamwork, and emotional resilience.
You will explore how to develop rapport with peers and colleagues in virtual settings, strengthen your ability to work effectively in diverse teams, and manage workplace challenges with confidence. Through real-world scenarios and practical exercises, you will gain insights into applying EI principles to improve both academic performance and career success.
Whether you are preparing for a remote-first job or a hybrid work environment, this seminar will help you build the emotional intelligence skills necessary for long-term professional growth.
Some information about the speaker:
We are absolutely delighted that, thanks to SATLE funding, Dr. Aiden Carthy, Director of the Research Centre for Psychology, Education and Emotional Intelligence (PEEI) at Technological University Dublin will host two of his excellent Emotional Intelligence workshops at SETU, Waterford. With a background in psychology and a passion for education, Aiden has spent over a decade exploring how emotional intelligence can support student success, staff well-being, and more meaningful learning environments, especially in fields like computing, where communication and collaboration are just as vital as technical skills.
Aiden is also the author of The Emotionally Intelligent College, (https://www.cambridgescholars.com/product/978-1-4438-8689-5) a practical and research-based guide to helping students and educators develop key emotional and social skills. His work focuses on real-world strategies to reduce stress, improve teamwork, and enhance resilience, making academic and professional life more balanced and fulfilling.
Known for his approachable style and sense of humour, Aiden brings warmth and insight to his workshops. This session offers an opportunity to reflect on how emotional intelligence can strengthen both individual growth and team dynamics in the fast-moving world of computing.
While these particular workshops are focussed on the computing side of things, all students, staff, our industry partners and members of the wider community are welcome. I can honestly say that anyone who has had the fortune to have attended his workshops have not regretted it but you don’t have to take my word for it…..
“I had the pleasure of attending a workshop facilitated by Aiden Carthy this year which I found to be extremely informative, transformative and thought-provoking both personally and professionally. Aiden recommended an array of practical strategies which I have incorporated into my professional practice with great success. Not to be missed.” – Dr. Caroline McGarry, SETU
