TEL Community of Practice: Stephen Barnes

Using VR/AR in Education and to Prepare Students for Industry

Our next hybrid TEL Community of Practice takes place on Monday November 29th at 1pm in the Growth Hub, Room F10 on the Cork Rd campus. This event will also be available on Zoom for those who can’t attend in person.

Stephen Barnes from WIT’s Walton Institute (formerly TSSG) joins us to share his experience in using AR/VR for education and in industry. The Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) market has grown substantially in recent years, registering a compound annual growth rate of 40.7%. Although its initial success has been in gaming and entertainment, there has been a swift uptake in the use of AR/VR technology as a highly engaging and effective educational tool. This has especially become pronounced for remote learning where AR/VR can provide immersive and intuitive experiences to enhance learning and content delivery. This immersive technology has also been adopted by numerous industrial sectors from Architecture Engineering and Construction – for data visualization – to Health, Retail to Real Estate.

This session shall provide a brief introduction to AR/VR concepts and technologies, focusing on how it can be used as a learning resource as well as detailing how it is currently being used in various industrial sectors. This can provide insight into how AR/VR can be used to engage students as well as how AR/VR is being adopted by industries across multiple disciplines.

Tea, coffee and finger food will be available from 1pm.

Please select the In Person ticket if you intend on attending in person. Select the Zoom ticket if you are attending online. The Zoom link will be shared at midday on Wednesday 29th.
