TEL Community of Practice: Dr Wayne Gibbons
Winner of individual Learning Technologist of the Year 2022 award from the Association for Learning Technology (UK).
Wayne has been lecturing on Built Environment Programmes in Higher Education since 2007. The modules that he currently teaches at the Atlantic Technological University (Galway) include ‘Learning Innovation Skills’, ‘Surveying and Digital Terrain Modelling’, ‘Environmental and Energy Sustainability’, ‘Research Methods’ and ‘Advanced Civil Engineering Software’.
He was awarded a Doctorate of Education in March 2020. His research topic focused on the design, implementation and impact of a digital open badges scheme on a Civil Engineering degree. The findings show that digital open badges increase motivation due to interest, promote engagement by incentivising and rewarding peer learning and attendance, and offer a mechanism for preparing for employment.
He values digital open badges as a means of credentialing achievements and behaviours that may otherwise go unrecognised in the traditional format of a simplistic percentage final grade.
